Biking in Atlanta
Atlanta, located in Fulton County, has seen a growing interest in bicycling, especially among Millennials and young entrepreneurs. The state capital, Atlanta has a population of approximately 450,000 residents, and with the surrounding metro area has more than 5.5 million people.
Atlanta is well known for its dependence on the automobile and for a sprawling highway system, with the infamous” Spaghetti Junction” at the intersection of Interstates 85 and 285.
Bicyclists are determined to change that perception and car culture. The city recently appointed its first Chief Bicycle Officer, Becky Katz, to head up its biking efforts. The city has recently expanded its biking facilities, including the Atlanta BeltLine, a 33-mile multi-use trail that has opened up new commuting options.
Ken’s comments: “Atlanta is becoming a better place to bike.... We are light on the amount of current bicycle infrastructure, but the current mayor is bicycle friendly and several bike advocacy groups have the mayor’s ear.”
Bruce’s comments: “There is definitely an emerging bike culture, with some great social groups, such as Courteous Mass and the Bike Commuters of Atlanta on Facebook. They get together to ride and socialize. Don’t get me wrong. There’s a lot of tension between drivers and bicyclists, and that tension has been in the news a lot lately, especially as the city grows and debates the need for bike lanes, like the ones that were just rejected in Buckhead. But lanes have been embraced in the downtown area, where you find younger people more interested in an active lifestyle.”
Atlanta Biking Snapshot
Cool bike facilities: The 33-mile Atlanta Beltline is opening up new commuting options. Current bike trails include a two-and-a-half mile trail in southwest Atlanta, and a two-and-a-half mile trial connecting Piedmont Park to Inman Park. Bruce’s comments: “It’s a mixed used path that has really gotten people to get out on bikes. If it’s fully completed, it could circle Atlanta. The city’s network is disconnected at this point. Right now anyone who wants to ride through the city has to do a lot of preplanning. So this could really help.”
More cool biking facilities: The Dick Lane Veldrome, a 1/5-mile outdoor track with 36-degree banking in the corners.
Good place for a cold one: Orpheus Brewing.
Advocacy groups: Include WeCycle Atlanta and Atlanta Bicycle Coalition. The coalition organizes Atlanta Streets Alive, an event which “takes a valuable public space – our city’s streets – and opens them up for people to play, walk, bike, breathe, and make their own,” according to the group’s website. Bruce’s comments: “The coalition is led by Rebecca Serna, who has been named as among the top 55 most influential people in the city by Atlanta Magazine.”
Bike parking! The old Sears building has been converted into Ponce City Market, with shops and restaurants. The market feature a free bike valet service, and it’s connected directly to the bike beltline
Bike shops: We frequent Atlanta Beltline Bicycles, Outback Bikes in Little Five Points, and Loose Nuts Cycles.
Bike Co-Op: Sopo Bicycle Cooperative’s mission is to create equitable access to cycling by providing affordable bicycle maintenance, services and education.
Group rides: There are lots of weekly daytime and night rides, some of which will have as many as 200 road cyclists. Southeastern Cycling has a list of rides on its site.
Bike racing: Atlanta has road racing, mountain bike racing, cyclocross racing, track racing and gravel bike racing. Southeastern Cycling has a calendar of road bike, mountaing bike and cyclocros events.
